Ferrari must "not change anything" to challenge in 2016

Ferrari Maurizio Arrivabene

Ferrari believes it does not need any dramatic changes in order to continue to close the gap on Mercedes and fight for the titles in the 2016 F1 season.

Sebastian Vettel staged a brilliant recovery from 14th on the grid in the US GP, due to an engine change penalty, to challenge for the top two finish that would have kept his slim title hopes alive.

But after late safety cars handed the initiative back to Mercedes, Vettel's third placed finish was not enough to stop Lewis Hamilton taking his third title with the win.

Although the result means that both F1 championships are now settled in Mercedes' favour, Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene is bullish that his outfit has what it takes to do a better job in 2016.

In particular, he feels the recruitment of former Mercedes engineer Jock Clear will act as a further boost.

"I think that the team this year demonstrated it was really strong," he said when asked if Ferrari had the infrastructure it needed to beat Mercedes in 2016.

"It's fine. We need to consolidate this team and not to change anything. To look forward to do a good job next year.

"Jock Clear is coming, but this person is not going to change the structure of the team, he comes in as an additional person."

Victory hopes

Although Vettel eventually finished third, Arrivabene said that the team had been contemplating pulling off a surprise victory after a mid-race decision to switch to medium tyres behind the safety car.

"At a certain point of the race, before the safety car for Hulkenberg, we were dreaming. But it's fine like this, we are happy," he said.

"We were thinking to go to the end with the first type of tyres, and then we looked at the timing when Mercedes was changing too.

"We said we need the tyres that are better performing than [the medium], but the original idea without the safety car was to keep those tyres until the end of the race."
