Montezemolo hits back at Ferrari boss Marchionne

Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo

Luca di Montezemolo has hit back at Sergio Marchionne after the new Ferrari president said the team had made the "wrong choices" under Montezemolo's control leading to a "disastrous" 2014 season.

In a year of upheaval at Maranello, Montezemolo made way for Marchionne, leaving Ferrari after 40 years working in various positions in the FIAT group. Marchionne has already set about making changes, getting rid of the Montezemolo-appointed team principal Marco Mattiacci and bringing in Maurizio Arrivabene.

Speaking at Ferrari's Christmas media dinner, Marchionne said the team had made "too many mistakes" and that 2015 would have to be a "reconstitution year" to correct the errors.

However, Montezemolo, who oversaw Ferrari's longest period of success in the early 2000s, said his work at the team deserves respect.

In a statement given to the ANSA news agency, he said: "Dear Marchionne, I don't intend to give in to provocation, but my work and what I won on the track and on the markets with Ferrari deserve respect."

Montezemolo remains involved in the sport after recently being appointed to F1's board.
